Getting a good night's sleep is as vital to our health as exercise and eating well but just over 18% of Brits admit that they never get a really good night's sleep and one in six only get a good sleep three nights out of seven. But what stops us sleeping well and how can we really enjoy time in bed?

A lot of people worry about changing their beds, for fear their new bed will end up more uncomfortable than the one they've got now. The Sleep Council has this simple guide to help you make the right choice:-

• Decide your priorities and concerns in advance. For example, is it :- price, storage, access to the bedroom, turning the mattress, getting in and out of bed, overall size or shape, a health issue, etc.
• If possible, try a selection of beds for comparison before you buy.
• Buy for correct support and comfort for your weight and build - not just firmness.
• Lie down in your normal sleeping position and make some turns, too. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any outdoor gear.
• Take your time - it takes more than five seconds to try out a bed properly. Five minutes per bed would be better.
• Try it together, if the bed's for two.
• Don't forget a bed is a mattress and a base working together - don't consider them in isolation.
• Think big - larger beds are more comfortable.
• You get what you pay for - both in product and service - so spend as much as you can afford.

Mattress lifespan
How long will a new mattress last? It depends. A combination of variables affects the length of time that a sleep set will provide optimum support and comfort. These variables include:

QUALITY  A poor-quality mattress set can deteriorate quickly, while top-quality sets can be expected to provide comfort and support for a number of years. As with other products, you get what you pay for.

FREQUENCY OF USE  All things being equal, a sleep set in the master bedroom that is used on a nightly, continuous basis will lose comfort more quickly than one in a guest room.

WEIGHT  An adult who is heavy wears out a mattress more quickly than someone who is lightweight. And since two people weigh more than one, an adult who sleeps alone puts less wear and tear on their mattress than a couple who sleeps together.
